A homely Chinese restaurant with a retro Showa atmosphere

Founded in 1964, Manpuku is a Chinese restaurant known for its unique mapo noodles that do not use doubanjiang. The mapo sauce, which clings to a clear chicken broth, is exquisite, offering a perfect balance of spiciness and umami. The interior exudes a nostalgic Showa ambiance, and the warm hospitality makes for a pleasant experience. Other dishes like fried rice and gyoza are also delicious, making it a must-visit spot when you're in Omori Kaigan.

It's exciting to see the skillful preparation right in front of me. The mapo noodles have a moderate spiciness and a gentle sweetness, and the hot tofu is delicious. The noodles are slightly thick and mix well with the sauce, making it enjoyable to eat until the end. The fried rice has a wonderful combination of umami and sweetness, with a very good balance of flavors. The meat soba has a pleasant richness from the pork belly and a crisp texture from the Chinese cabbage, making it lighter than it looks. The interior of the restaurant has a sense of history, and the white noren (curtain) adds depth, creating a warm atmosphere run by a family that is comforting.
