The small diner at the edge of the morning market near Hakodate Station has a Showa-era atmosphere that is calming. The owner is lively and a great conversationalist, so sitting at the counter leads to engaging conversations. The grilled mackerel set meal is plump and rich in flavor, and when eaten with the miso soup made from fresh wakame, it has a comforting taste. When you order a set meal, several small side dishes come with it, each with a homely and gentle flavor. The sashimi of scallops is surprisingly fresh, and the chewy texture of the strings is excellent. There is also generous service with local sake poured generously, making it a place that warms the heart.
