Upon entering the traditionally calm interior of the restaurant, I could see the owner skillfully preparing dishes over the counter. When I ordered the sanma (mackerel pike) set meal, a perfectly grilled fish along with a rich miso soup and a variety of colorful side dishes were served, making me smile involuntarily. The tempura, which was fried right in front of me, had a light batter, and the melting texture of the eggplant was impressive. The seasonal bracken and homemade pickles, along with the carefully prepared small side dishes, made it impossible to stop eating. Holding a well-chilled beer in one hand, I enjoyed a pleasant time chatting with the cheerful wife. The combination of over half a century of history and warm hospitality created a fulfilling moment that evoked the charm of the Showa era.
