On the way back from a mountain walk, I was excited to stop by a spacious dining hall that made use of an old school building. The system of taking off shoes at the entrance and changing into slippers felt comforting, like a rural community center. Since you place your order and pay at the register before heading to your seat, you can just relax and wait for your food. The button hot pot was filled with thick slices of meat and plenty of vegetables, and the miso-based broth had a deep umami flavor. The katsu curry had a generous serving of rice, and the crispy breaded pork cutlet paired perfectly with the rich curry. Surrounded by the warmth of the wood stove, both my stomach and heart were satisfied, and I headed home very content.
