A Hidden Izakaya Featuring Seasonal Sashimi and Grilled Skewers

Nestled in a back alley of Motomachi in the Higashi Ward, 'Maruyu Shoten' is a cozy izakaya with only counter seating. Despite being run solely by the owner, service is smooth, and the warm atmosphere and attentive hospitality are well-regarded. The menu boasts an impressive selection of incredibly fresh sashimi, including fatty tuna and scallops, along with hearty grilled skewers and creative egg dishes, all highlighting the quality of the ingredients. The establishment is completely non-smoking, ensuring a clean air environment, making it a perfect spot for those looking to enjoy a leisurely meal and drinks.

It's a small shop with only a counter and box seats, but the owner moves quickly and efficiently, so I didn't feel any waiting time. It's completely non-smoking, so the air is fresh, and there's no smoky atmosphere typical of izakayas, making it a comfortable place. The egg with dashi was fluffy, and when I took a bite, a gentle aroma spread, making me smile involuntarily. The crispy fried chicken skin gyoza was enjoyable with the flavor of the meat and the texture of the skin, making it a perfect match for drinks. The sashimi platter, including fatty tuna, salmon, and scallops, was fresh, and I was surprised by the sushi restaurant-level quality of the ingredients. There are also rice bowls and yakisoba, so it's a place where friends who don't drink can easily join, truly a local hidden gem.
