In Japan, there is no unit called a "pint," but in the UK, it exists on a daily basis (a pint is one-eighth of a gallon). In the UK, there is a law that draft beer must be sold in English measurements. The British pint is approximately 568ml and the American pint is approximately 473ml. Originally, the English "gallon" was a variety of slightly different sizes depending on what was being weighed, such as corn or wine, etc. The "wine gallon" (= 3.79L) was introduced to the United States in the early 18th century, so a pint of rice today is 3.79L/8 = approximately 473ml. In England, however, in the early 19th century, the volume of 10 pounds of water (454 ml x 10 = 4.541) was used as one English gallon in order to unify the complex gallons. Thus, an English pint is 4.54 liters divided by 8 = approximately 568 ml.
