The final stop on the Izu eating journey is Wan-tan-ya, a long-established and famous restaurant in Atami, where the lines never stop. The wonton noodle store has been a favorite of the whole family, stopping by on family vacations since childhood. Founded in 1947, the owner, who is over 80 years old, still shakes the noodles. The noodles are thin and eggy, and the boiling process is the work of a master. The noodles are covered with a lid and cooked hard, but the inside is soft and fluffy. The wontons are well seasoned and have a smooth texture. The soup has a nostalgic old-fashioned chicken broth soy sauce flavor. Noodles, chashu pork, and wontons are all in large portions. It is difficult for a woman to finish the meal. The gyoza are oversized, packed with ingredients, and so juicy that the juices fly out, so women should be careful with their clothes. If you order a beer, you will get a small assortment of pork chashu, pickled daikon radish, and leeks, which is a great value. Wonton noodle soup was a favorite of both my late father and grandmother. I felt happy, thinking of the family trips we had enjoyed after not eating there for a long time. I recommend arriving 30 minutes before the restaurant opens as there is a line up before the restaurant opens.
