The small, old shop's sakana is elegant! Before going to Shukugawa, I did some research beforehand to see what kind of stores were there. There are only 3 reviews, but there are 3.7 stars! I was so curious that I decided to pay a visit! Along the Shukugawa Park, there is a big sign that reads "Sanmasu Jaimon Monaka"! The store is located behind it. It is a very small store. It's so small that you wonder if you're in the right place. When you hear the name of a long-established Japanese confectionery shop, you may imagine an old-fashioned house. but here, the exterior and the lamps are western style. Inside the store is a small showcase, and the place is full of customers when 2 or 3 people enter. What they are selling Sanmasu monaka: azuki beans, white bean paste, yuzu (yuzu), 170 yen each Akitsu-nada monaka: 180 yen Ume monaka: 210 yen Monaka-tei: Anko (sweet bean paste) 230 yen per piece, monaka skin 70 yen per piece Shukugawa Komachi - Dry yokan bean jelly cut into thin strips - 200 yen per bag Dorayaki 150 yen We are happy to buy them all by the piece! The signature item here is the monaka, so I bought one of each kind. I bought a white bean paste for the Sanmasu Monaka! I was a little surprised at the fresh aroma of the bean paste and the super moist white bean paste, which was very elegant! I have never had such moist red bean paste! The chestnuts are finely sprinkled, so you can enjoy the texture as well! Akitsu-nanmonaka is shaped like a clam and comes in two colors: brown and blue! The taste is the same. The skin is crispy and the cheap ones stick to your mouth, but of course, this is not the case here! It's rude to even compare them! The red bean paste is so moist, smooth and delicious! Ume monaka is plum because it's February, but it becomes sakura monaka during cherry blossom season! I am sure they would be a great gift for celebrations! Anko (red bean paste) still made in the traditional way does not last long. The price is not cheap, but when you eat it, you will appreciate the quality of the ingredients. It's a hidden gem in Shukugawa. I think it's a good idea to buy a bag of rice cake here and take a walk in Shukugawa Park. I hope this store will be around forever!
