A renowned restaurant for shojin cuisine that evokes history and the seasons

Hōkō-ji is a major temple of the Rinzai sect with a 700-year history, offering shojin cuisine that deeply moves its visitors. The essential dishes skillfully incorporate tofu and seasonal vegetables, with each item filled with creativity that elicits admiration for their deliciousness. The shojin unagi, in particular, utilizes yam, lotus root, and tofu to bring out natural flavors, astonishing many visitors. Along with the diverse Buddhist architecture spread across the vast grounds, it provides a tranquil moment for the soul.

It is located in a quiet mountain area, and the atmosphere of the grounds is very pleasant. Walking while admiring the statues of the Arhats and the five-story pagoda makes the stroll enjoyable. I made a reservation and was guided at the reception. Before the meal, there was a talk expressing gratitude for the food, which was quite moving. The vegetarian cuisine had a wide variety of dishes, beautifully arranged with yuba, sesame tofu, and simmered dishes. In particular, one dish that resembled eel was made by layering yam, lotus root, and tofu, with seaweed representing the skin, and both the aroma and texture were satisfying.
