Okinawa's famous liquor, Awamori, is a type of distilled spirit said to have been introduced from Siam (Thailand) in the 15th century. At that time, during the great trading era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, trade was conducted with Southeast Asian countries, China, Korea, and Japan, and the Ryukyu Kingdom flourished. By the 17th century, Awamori was placed under strict control as the official liquor of the Ryukyu Kingdom and was only produced in a limited area near Shuri Castle. Awamori is a world-renowned liquor born from the Ryukyu Islands. The geology of Miyako Island consists of highly permeable Ryukyu limestone formed from coral reefs, and rainwater is naturally filtered, resulting in hard groundwater rich in minerals. This water is ideal for brewing Awamori, creating a rich aroma and smooth flavor.
