Nikko is known for the World Heritage Sites "Shrines and Temples of Nikko". Nikko Toshogu Shrine, one of the World Heritage Sites, is also known as the place dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate. Ieyasu, who lived to be 75 years old during the Edo period when the average life expectancy was 30~40 years old, is said to have favored tempura, red miso paste, barley rice, and abekawa mochi (rice cake). According to one theory, Ieyasu was a man who took very good care of his health and ate fresh, local, seasonal ingredients without too much modification.
