Unagi Hirota is a specialty eel restaurant located just a 2-minute walk from Gotemba Station. The exquisite grilled eel, prepared with a rich sauce passed down since the Meiji era and accompanied by award-winning hon-wasabi, is a must-try. The use of locally sourced Gotemba Koshihikari rice for their unagi-don and a wide variety of skewers are also appealing features. I was invited by a friend to dinner. I wanted something refreshing, so I ordered the shiroyaki rice. I had the shiroyaki eel with wasabi soy sauce, which was very tasty and a perfect match between the sweetness of the rich fat of the eel and the crisp flavor of the wasabi. It tasted different from the sweet sauce, but the wasabi soy sauce also tasted good enough to go with the rice.
