Heartwarming Homemade Flavors in a Showa Retro Space

Kissaten Karyudo, nestled in the traditional gassho-zukuri townscape of Shirakawa-go, offers a tranquil dining experience in a calm atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era. Here, you can enjoy handmade udon, soba, and set meals. Dishes like the kitsune udon, featuring sweetly simmered deep-fried tofu that absorbs the broth, provide a rustic yet deeply flavorful taste that soothes the fatigue of travel. The warmth of the place makes it a spot you’ll want to visit every day, just like a local.

This is a nostalgic shop that you can stop by while walking in Shirakawa-go. It offers familiar menu items such as udon, soba, and set meals, making it perfect for a break. The kitsune udon, with its sweet fried tofu and gentle broth, has a comforting flavor. The noodles are soft and warm the body. The warm interior, styled like a traditional farmhouse, and the pleasant service from the staff were also enjoyable. Outside, the fragrant aroma of gohei mochi spreads, allowing you to enjoy the sweet and salty taste of the miso sauce along with its chewy texture and the beautiful scenery.
