Among various theories, the one introduced here relates to the railroads during the westward expansion in America. At that time, railroads adopted the 'ball-type signal', where a ball at the bottom meant stop (red signal) and a ball at the top meant go (blue signal). When the ball was raised, it signified 'Highball!', meaning 'Departure, proceed!' or 'A train is coming! Time to work!'.
