It was discovered in 1931 in the village of Gesha in southwestern Ethiopia and named 'Geisha'. While Panama is famous for it, the Geisha was first brought to Panama in the mid-1960s. However, due to poor growth, it was abandoned at that time. In the 2000s, at La Esmeralda Farm in the Boquete region of Panama, the Geisha trees bore bright red fruit, taking a new step forward. In the 2004 coffee auction, the Geisha from La Esmeralda Farm astonished tasters with its unprecedented flavor and quality, selling for ten times the usual price. Since then, Geisha has continued to receive high praise, and in 2013, it recorded the highest price ever at $350 per pound, being called 'the most expensive coffee in the world'.
