As I entered a small shop overflowing with the atmosphere of the Showa era, a savory aroma wafted up from the iron griddle. The owner was carefully spreading the batter over the counter, and just watching her was exciting. The signature dish, okonomiyaki, had a light and fluffy texture, yet the flavor of the squid came through strongly from the batter, which was impressive. The special sauce was mildly sweet with a spicy aftertaste, perfectly complementing the aroma of the griddle and offering an adult flavor. Conversations naturally flowed with the regulars and travelers sitting next to me, and the entire shop felt warm, like an old-fashioned living room. I felt that this was a precious place where I could fully experience the owner's craftsmanship and the warmth of Nara's hospitality in a relaxed atmosphere.
