At the time of its establishment, Château Mouton Rothschild was classified as a second growth, but approximately 100 years later, in 1973, it broke the long-standing tradition of the classification and was elevated to first growth status. In 2003, 500 saplings of the indigenous Japanese variety 'Koshu' were transplanted to Rheingau, Germany. Due to the new EU law in 2005, the import of grape varieties from outside the EU is prohibited, so it is currently not possible to bring Koshu from Japan to EU countries.
