As the name suggests, it has a rich flavor and abundant fat similar to that of fatty tuna. Sardines caught in the eastern region of Hokkaido from October to November are highly valued for their rarity, with local fishermen proudly stating, 'There are no sardines with as much fat as those caught off the eastern coast of Hokkaido in all of Japan. They are thick and delicious because they are caught before spawning.'
