A cozy izakaya with handmade gyoza as its charm

Izakaya Tokiwa is a beloved establishment in the triangular area of Sangenjaya, having been in business for 30 years. The interior is small and intimate, with red lanterns creating a Showa-era atmosphere. The signature handmade gyoza, wrapped in a chewy skin and filled with juicy ingredients, is particularly popular.

In a small, traditional tavern located deep in an alley, the red lanterns catch the eye. When you open the door, a pink public telephone is still in use, adding to the nostalgic Showa retro atmosphere. The space, with only a counter, is calming, and the warmth of the staff is comforting. The homemade gyoza has a chewy skin and is filled with plenty of juicy meat, which is irresistible. The snacks like croquettes, shrimp cutlets, ham cutlets, and dried stingray fins are casual and encourage drinking. Conversations with regulars flow naturally, and just being here fills both the stomach and the heart.
