From the Meiji to the Taisho era, Japan had five major beer companies. These include the familiar names 'Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Yebisu,' and the fifth was 'Kabuto Beer.' Kabuto Beer was born in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, in the 32nd year of the Meiji era. After numerous quality improvements, just one year after its birth, in the 33rd year of the Meiji era, it won a prestigious gold medal at the Paris Exposition held in Paris, France, rising to the level of popularity to stand alongside Japan's four major beers! Furthermore, it gained popularity as the most widely shared beer in the Tokai region at that time. However, in the 18th year of the Showa era, as the situation of the Pacific War worsened, the Imperial Japanese government implemented a corporate reorganization order, and Kabuto Beer had to temporarily close the curtain on its glorious history. But! In the 16th year of the Heisei era, about 100 years after its birth, Kabuto Beer was revived with the faithful reproduction of the Meiji-era recipe, bringing back its legendary taste! Its aroma and color set it apart from modern beers. Everything about it is nostalgic, yet it has a deliciousness that becomes addictive. At Nayahashi TWILO, we go to Handa City every week to procure freshly brewed draft beer! Please take this opportunity to enjoy fresh Kabuto Beer while feeling the grand historical romance in the retro atmosphere that remains at Nayahashi.
The origin of the name 'Kabuto Beer' is said to come from the way beer was gulped down, which was referred to as 'kaburu' at the time. Additionally, it is said that the name was inspired by the 'kabuto' (helmet), a symbol of bravery, during the time of the First Sino-Japanese War.
Shortly after winning the prestigious gold medal at the Paris Exposition in 1906, Kabuto Beer established the 'Kabuto Beer Nagoya Branch' here at Nayahashi in Nagoya! Literally serving as a business base for nationwide expansion, it was beloved by the local people until before the war. In the Meiji era, Nayahashi was still wooden, but the Kabuto Beer Nagoya Branch showcased its presence with a modern appearance featuring arch-shaped decorations on the rooftop of a concrete building from that time! As a landmark of Nayahashi, it gained popularity not only among local residents but also as a proud symbol of Aichi Prefecture.
From the Meiji to Taisho era, Kabuto Beer was one of the five major beers in Japan. Among them, Kabuto Beer was the first to implement an innovative advertising strategy using art posters, which was quite groundbreaking for its time! It's surprising to think that our beloved 'Kabuto Beer' was a pioneer in advertising strategies that are now commonplace among various manufacturers, isn't it? At Nayahashi TWILO and Takayama Frame Shop, we are reviving the thoughts of our predecessors by showcasing works created by artists themed around Kabuto Beer in the TWILO store space, changing monthly. The artists primarily hold exhibitions in the adjacent gallery space 'Nayahashi Komore.' When you visit TWILO, be sure to check it out! We would also like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the artists who have supported the Kabuto Beer Art Project.

Kabuto Beer comes in two varieties: Meiji and Taisho, and we have one of these kegs available at our store. Please note that due to the rotation of kegs, you cannot enjoy both Meiji and Taisho at the same time. Meiji has a darker color and a flavor close to a stout with a mild carbonation. Taisho is amber-colored, has a stronger carbonation than Meiji, but offers a smooth flavor on the palate, characteristic of lager beers. The draft Kabuto Beer is exclusively available at our store and the Akarenka Club Handa located in Handa City. We invite you to taste the popular draft Kabuto Beer that attracts fans from all over the country.
