Tuyama Tea is said to have originated in the 5th year of the Bunwa era (1356) when a monk named Junko from Jomeiji brought back tea seeds from Daitokuji and began cultivation. The cultivation became active about 300 years later during the Edo period, when a monk named Tenrei from Eiunji widely cultivated tea and shared it as a beverage with villagers and travelers, which became famous as 'Akebono Tea' and laid the foundation for Tuyama Tea. Furthermore, due to the favorable climate and environment for tea cultivation, production dramatically expanded after the Edo period, and it is now a major production area of kabuse tea, boasting the highest production volume and cultivation area in the prefecture.
