Its bubbles are insistent, finely carved and add to the early sensations of lightness and energy yet also carry the wine long into a balanced, refined finish. And its latter palate grip is exactly what one should expect from the genre. While service with light foods would be our first choice, this one has the beauty to stand alone

In the glass, the "Grand Cellier" is a brilliant straw-gold in the glass, with an assertive nose of yellow apple, pear, nectarine, baking spices, fresh ginger, and a hint of dried herbs. The texture is opulent but focused and mineral, with a satisfying, lip-smacking savor of crushed stone minerality and a hint of wood smoke. It should be immediately evident that this wine will age for 10-20 years with ease, its multi-layered flavored propped up on a solid foundation of minerality and acid. BenMarco Malbec is a testament to Uco Valley, from which it hails, proffering aromas of fresh black fruit and floral notes of violets. The palate shows great balance, very fine tannins, and a thread of acidity going through its core, lifting it up and going its length

Very deep crimson with purple hues. Aromas of rich dark cherries, Satsuma plum and mulberry fruits jump out of the glass, mingling with fine milk chocolate, white pepper and cinnamon. Château Teyssier is a St Emilion Grand Cru located in Vignonet, one of five St Emilion communes. The property has a long history of wine production, going back as far as 1714 when it was little more than a farm. In 1869 the property was purchased by the historian Jules Roy, who constructed a grand Château and developed the surrounding vineyards. From then on little had changed until Jonathan and Lyn Maltus purchased the property in 1994.

Green apple and greengage on the nose turn into white peach and lemon on the palate. The mousse is frothy and lively and there is a wonderful depth to these tart fruit flavors that takes you to juicy, green pastures and white blossom. On airing, the dominant fruitiness becomes intense, almost explosive: a sabayon of vine peaches,apricots, melon and mango. The mouth features a rounded, complex ballet of fruit. The texture is incredibly concentrated, giving the impression of biting into a ripe, fleshy fruit. The palate is enveloped by this depth of juicy, creamy, silky fruit, which soon makes way for a pure, sharp, graceful freshness. A transition follows from ripe fruit to a clear, light, delicate environment. Ripeness, softness and concentration arise from freshness and mineral quality, transforming the ripe fruit into a slightly sharp citrus flavor; the warmer notes make way for flowers, citrus zests and nuts. After this rapid succession of flavors, there is a lasting impression of harmony: the aromas, flavors, slight bitterness and freshness come in just the right proportions, intermingling to form a perfectly integrated yet complex whole. Salon is located in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côtes des Blancs. The core of Salon emerges from a small vineyard that sits right behind the house. Salon is done entirely in steel, with no malolactic fermentation, one of the reasons the wines need extended time in bottle prior to release, and in most cases, several years on the cork before they start drinking well. In vintages in which Salon is not made, the fruit goes into Delamotte, Salon's sister estate and neighbour. The Delamotte style is less severe, as malolactic fermentation is employed to give the wines softer contours and more immediate breadth

A rigorous barrel selection led to our small lot 2013 Civility Chardonnay. The wine is youthful and fresh, with a backbone of acidity and fine minerality. Notes of stone fruits, white flowers, and subtle oak linger on the palate.

Varietal: Chardonnay. Sub-Region: North Coast. 2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn't have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25 of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure

Sub-Region: Puligny-Montrachet, Cote de Beaune. Cru: Grand Cru. Chevalier-Montrachet is a matter of aromatics, of the finest of the finest, preserved, reserved, impressionable and of quietly powerful impression

Varietal: Chardonnay. Sub-Region: Cote d'Or. Cru: Grand Cru. The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 is of a shimmering, pale yelow colour. It is powerful and complex on the nose; revealing aromas of acacia honey accompanied by toasty notes and hints of hazelnut. In the mouth, the notes of honey remain and there are also flavours of yellow fruits and a lovely oaky touch. It is a lovely round wine with power and elegance

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc. This is a stunning example of Pouilly-Fume and another clear demonstration of the difference between the old-world and the new. Aromas combine grapefruit and herbal notes but it's not aggressive like so many modern examples of Sauvignon Blanc. Light and fresh on the palate, displaying a good balance of sweetness vs. acidity

Pale golden colour, perfect clarity. Open, fruity and concentrated nose (Citrus and tropical fruits). Fine and expressive aromas in mouth. The balance of the taste appears when chilled

Tangerine and honeysuckle combine into an aromatic nose. The off-dry palate also rings with that heady tangerine note and provides zestiness for balance. The fruit continues to echo in this wine with lovely intensity and good length

Concentrated nose filled with nectarines, preserved peach, wildflower honey, cinnamon and candied lime. Great weight and texture on the palate, with a long flavourful finish

Bright aromas of peach, jasmine, honeysuckle and lemon chiffon hint towards the medley of mango, mandarin, fresh green apple, honeydew melon and a faint whisper of licorice

Varietal: Riesling. Cru: Grand Cru. The 2015 Riesling Schlossberg comes from the bottom of the praised single vineyard and opens with a lovely, pure, refined and elegant bouquet of bright Riesling and lemon fruit aromas, intertwined with very delicate flinty/mineral flavors. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and rich, yet elegant Riesling with a warm, super ripe fruit (that reminds me of healthy shriveled raisins) and some grippy rather than fine phenols. The acidity is vital and finely racy, and takes this Schlossberg to a long and aromatic, pretty refreshing finish with stimulating salinity

The shiny pale yellow color with green reflections opens on a delicate nose that combines the smells of flowers with those of white fruits (peach, apricot), then is enriched with nuances of vanilla and caramel. The mouth offers a well balanced matter between the freshness and the fruity aromas (passion, mango) which persist in an elegant final and very long finish

Entirely Melon de Bourgogne, to the eye, this wine seems to glow from within. The palate is a rich and inviting mix of ripe melon and crisp apple

This Pinot Grigio was sourced from vines planted on the middle and top slopes of the vineyard and is quite complex, with floral tones, honey, earth, mushroom and a long, impressive finish

Varietal: Garganega. It opens fresh, mineral, deep, with fragrant field flower notes (camomile, elderflower, iris). On the palate is rich, complex and multidimensional with a finish of almond. With time, these notes transform into more complex notes of pollens, dried flowers

Our 2012 Incivility Pinot Noir has a shy nose starts with notes of wet stone and opens up into ripe raspberries and current compote. The fruit is complemented by smatterings of vanilla and toasted hazelnuts. The palate has a vibrant and powerful entrance. Light garnet colour with red and black fruit. Vanilla and toast complement cassis and cherry flavours and spicy velvety tannins fill out this well rounded Pinot Noir. Its balanced structure will allow the wine to age 6 to 7 years

Hand-picked and hand-sorted on September 24th, the grapes were de-stemmed, partially crushed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. After 3 days, fermentation occurred spontaneously in small open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the skins were punched-down by hand 2 times per day. Once fermentation was finished, the wine remained on skins for 6 days before being gently pressed. It was then transferred to French oak barrels (25 new, 25 1-year-old, 50 older) and aged for 15 months

Sub-Region: Niagara. This Pinot is from the Lowrey Vineyard which planted their vines back in 1984 it is rumoured to be the oldest Pinot planting in Niagara. From the most coveted blocks within To Kalon-the treasured vineyard of Robert Mondavi that was the location of his winery home since 1966- this is the fourth vintage of the To Kalon-designated Reserve. Like a classic rock 'n' roll tune from that era, this wine ranks among the most revered and will continue to be memorable for decades. Among the top five songs of 1966 were 'Cherish' by The Association and 'Soul and Inspiration' by The Righteous Brothers, which are appropriately a good fit for describing To Kalon Vineyard. From its aromas of dark cherry and vanilla spice to its deeply-expressive notes of graphite, leather, plum, and earth, the velvet drapes across the palate from start to finish

The Cabernet Sauvignon can be a bit simple, so, in the "Cain Way," we have blended judicious quantities of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot to build complexity, to add nuance, to articulate the structure, and to add length to the fi nish of the wine. The Franc gives a bit of lift to the nose, and the Merlot gives a bit of fat to the entry and mid-palate, while the Verdot adds backbone to the blend

Another classic from Philip Togni, his 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain does not have the power and richness of his greatest vintages, but it exhibits the cedary, Pauillac/St.-Julien style that Togni routinely achieves. A healthy dark ruby color is followed by a sweet kiss of underbrush, forest floor, black currants and a whiff of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied and playing close to the vest at present, it reveals good fruit as well as the potential to evolve for 15 or more years

A broad expression of aromas and flavors. Bold dark fruits are ample and plush coming forth black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and a hint of sweet cedar spice. The generous flavors come up boldly, but are silky and mouth filling. Generous with black fruit flavours, hints of dark chocolate and a touch of toasty caramel and spice

Initially expressing floral (violet and iris) aromatics, the fruit characteristics (blueberries and fig) become dominate. Opulent on entry, the 2015 builds richness and volume while keeping a vibrancy on the palate, even a hint of playfulness. Focus comes form natural acidity, while the pleasing balance originates from the fruit. The 2015 finishes with energy, a mineral edge, and sweet tannins

Always one of the stars of Napa is Cliff Lede's Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry and the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry is a blend of 87 Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 Merlot, 6 Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Never the biggest wine made by Cliff Lede, this is an elegant, classic Stags Leap example with finesse allied to beautifully pure power and balance. Deep and rich and possibly, at this stage, less expressive than some of its siblings, it is simply loaded and poised for a brilliant future. RP

Sub-Region: North Coast. 2012 Vecina Proprietary Red is the perfect Napa version of a hypothetical blend of a La Mission Haut-Brion and Mouton-Rothschild. This is riveting Cabernet Sauvignon with great intensity, a killer fragrance of burning embers, charcoal, gravel, blackberry, cassis and earth. Fabulously intense and full-bodied, with majestic flavor intensity, a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, incredible purity and length, and supple tannins, this magnificent wine comes closest to the great Harlan Estate itself. This vintage of "IX Estate" captures all of the terroir and the varietal notes we love from this rocky, iron-rich site, with even a greater sense of volume. The grilled herbs, the iron, and the crushed rock flavors from "IX Estate" beam through the fruit giving this wine a perfect sense of place. In the mouth the wine delivers peppy flavors of tart raspberry and blackberry fruit with hightoned strawberry jam notes appearing at the back of the mouth. With repeated sips additional accents of cardamom and anise appear, backed by cherry cola notes and a hint of barrel char. There is a vigorous quality to the flavors, with edgy tartness and brightlytoned fruitiness. The wine seems to vacillate between high notes of strawberry and raspberry, with darker tones of blackberry. The structure is firm but not domineering, while the acidity is bracing. The fruit-dominated finish is of medium length.

A nose of dusty florals emphasised by pink roses and violets integrates seamlessly with Asian spices of cinnamon and clove. The palate opens softly, staying with the florals and adding fresh berries and a pleasing seam of minerality. Mouth-coating, but never cloying, it is subtle and caressing; a wine of harmony, restraint and sophistication that intrigues rather than shouts its breeding. According to Nick, it is the cool, coastal Langhorne Creek climate that gives the reds this lift. Hot northerly winds from the centre of the continent are blocked by the Mt Lofty Ranges to the north of Langhorne Creek. And every day at 5 pm in comes a cool "Lake Doctor" wind from the Southern Ocean, that slows ripening, preserves acidity and amplifies the fruit and savoury aromatics. As do the cooler fermentation techniques employed by Ben Glaetzer. And to me, that is the real key, an aromatic not all that different from other Aussie regions in terms of profile, but just a bit more piquant and fragrant

Aromas of rich dark cherries, Satsuma plum and mulberry fruits jump out of the glass, mingling with fine milk chocolate, white pepper and cinnamon. A blockbuster effort, the 2003 Shiraz The Freedom is produced from some of the estate's oldest dry farmed vineyards (some dating back to 1843). Aged two months in new French hogsheads and smaller barrels, this is a full-throttle, high velocity, inky/purple-hued Shiraz boasting gorgeous aromas of creosote, blackberry liqueur, melted licorice, tar, and pepper. With a fabulous texture, amazing richness as well as concentration, and a long, surprisingly refined and sophisticated finish, it should drink well for 15+ years.- The Wine Advocate

The inky/blue/black/purple-colored 2001 Shiraz Astralis boasts an extraordinary bouquet of graphite blackberry liqueur espresso acacia flowers and licorice. Fabulously concentrated with a presence on the palate that must be tasted to be believed it possesses beautifully integrated tannin as well as enormous weight and richness but it is not over the top. Bratasiuk calls it his "Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque" and he's not far off. The Astralis is just denser and even more extracted.I have been a believer in Bratasiuk's top Shiraz cuvee Astralis since the first vintage. Made from 70-75-year old non-irrigated "bush" vines (head-pruned) this 600-700 case cuvee sees 100 new French oak and generally requires 4-8 years of cellaring. RP

It is bright, fresh and balanced with intense yet reserved characters of rosemary, sage, cinnamon, cedar and black pepper. Varietal: Shiraz. The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise. The nose has cola, blackberry, vanillin, hard brown spices of all kinds, coal smoke, meaty charcuterie elements and a strong tarry, savory note that speaks of the 85 Barossa Valley componentry. The palate has super deep tannins that fan out through flavorsome black fruits. These are purposeful tannins; they bristle on the palate, tantalizing and assertive yet playful, strong not aggressive. The power here is the thing; this has mouth-coating density and terrific drive, so tightly coiled, it gives enough away to suggest a very, very long cellaring wine is here. This is a classic Grange that will please the serious collectors. A wine of genuine pedigree.

The property has a long history of wine production, going back as far as 1714 when it was little more than a farm. In 1869 the property was purchased by the historian Jules Roy, who constructed a grand Château and developed the surrounding vineyards. From then on little had changed until Jonathan and Lyn Maltus purchased the property in 1994

A huge wine. The stunningly complex and perfumed nose has a aromas of pure berry fruit, mocha, spice and reviving minerality, combined with the richness evident in the Langoa. The palate is at the same time exuberantly rich and enticing as well as being demurely delicate and fresh with an astoundingly long length. The great structure implies that this will require some patience. This is a superbly sexy Leoville Barton that has a certain "wow" factor and is a cellar must-have.

Chateau MontroseChâteau Montrose is one of the leading wine properties of St.Estéphe, and produces some of the longest-lived wines in the Médoc. Montrose had been owned by Jean-Louis Charmolue from 1962 until 2006, when it was sold to Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owner of the eponymously named construction firm Bouygues, is located in the east of the appellation, just north of the hamlet of Marbuzet, on a gravel knoll only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary. The proximity of the estuary ensures a microclimate that protects against frost, and the vines, which lie on deep clay-gravel soils, benefit from a south-easterly aspect.Montrose's wine is typically a blend of 65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 Merlot and 10 Cabernet Franc and is matured in oak barriques (30 new) for 18 months

Varietal: Bordeaux Blend. Cru: Premier Grand Cru Classe A. Probably the wine of the vintage, once again. Only 9,000 bottles of the 2013 Ausone were produced, as crop size was 50 of normal. Yields were only 22 hectoliters per hectare and the final blend was 55 Cabernet Franc and 45 Merlot. The haunting aromas of wet rocks, spring flowers, blue and black fruits and forest floor are followed by an incredibly dense, attractive wine with sweet tannin, stunning concentration and texture, medium body and a depth that is essentially unreal in a vintage such as this. The wine is a superb example of great winemaking under the most difficult circumstances

Chateau Palmer produces a sensuous wine of beauty. Everything that makes up a great Bordeaux wine is found in Palmer. Complex aromatics filled with spice, truffle, violets, spring flowers, earth and leather scents. Full bodied and rich, this wine personifies elegance in a Bordeaux wine. When mature, the textures experienced in Chateau Palmer are unequaled in other Bordeaux wines. Silk wrapped in velvet, with layers of satin and ripe berries

Despite the heavy rain in September, the wines were very richly coloured and classy, showing great power and a beautiful liveliness, with a pronounced expression of Cabernet. The fruit is less exuberant, but the "Latour" character is very present. A wine that will benefit from very long ageing and that will require a long time in the bottle before showing a more integrated structure

The 48 hectare vineyard of Chateau Haut Brion is planted to 48.7 Merlot, 39.6 Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.7 Cabernet Franc and 1 Petit Verdot for the red wine grapes. This shows decrease in the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc plantings and an increase of Merlot in the vineyard since the mid 1990's. 2.9 hectares of vines have been reserved for the planting of white Bordeaux wine varietals. For the production of Chateau Haut Brion Blanc, the vineyard is planted to 51.5 Semillon and 48.5 Sauvignon Blanc. Although there is a small quantity of Sauvignon Gris planted in the vineyard as well. This shows a marked increase in the amount of Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard. For the white wine grapes of Haut Brion, the vines are planted in a terroir that is gravel over clay soils. The vineyard is quite close to the city center of Bordeaux, as the city is only 5 kilometers away, give or take. The terroir is deep gravel over clay and sand with a wide variety of minerals and quartz in the soils. As it is every year, the 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve represents a selection of the best fruit from the best vineyards (excluding, of course, Vigna del Sorbo that is dedicated to its own wine). The five parcels span various soils types and exposures, and the youngest vines are 20 years old. Because the fruit selection process is so detailed, the darkest and smallest clusters are carefully chosen. As a result, the fruit is rich in polyphenols, thick extract and extra aromatic intensity. The 2012 vintage saw yields reduced by as much as 20, meaning that fruit selection was even more severe in this vintage. This beautiful wine shows abundant richness and generosity with toned mineral nuances that are wrapped within bold flavors of dark fruit and spice. The wine is rich and velvety in texture.

This Castiglione Falletto vineyard is the smallest geographic area within the Barolo specification and comprises just over 1 hectare. It is the most prestigious part of what was once called La Serra and is nestled between the Villero and the Rocche (rock face) of Castiglione, which represents the best of the top parts; it can be considered a monopole as the whole parcel is the exclusive property of the Ceretto family. The height of the vineyard is optimum, going from 350 to 370 meters above sea level, with southeast to southwest exposure. The earth (sandstone of Diano) reinforce the ideal sense of balance, suggested the geographic location, and see good percentages of sand, silt and clay

A dark, mysterious beauty, the 2004 hits the palate with masses of black fruit, tobacco, smoke, licorice and incense. The 2004 is constantly changing in the glass, as it reveals layer after layer of flavor and pure nuance. Readers will have to be patient with the 2004, but it is spectacular. I tasted the 2004 just after bottling and will not be surprised if it is even better with more time in bottle. The huge, voluptuous finish bodes well for the future. Dark violet colour with ruby reflections; the nose offers cassis, blueberries and violets, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida is a red wine made by La Granja de Remelluri winery in D.O. La Rioja. It is a coupage of typical varieties: La Rioja Tempranillo, Grenache and Graciano. Like its name indicates, the grapes are grown on the boarders of La Granja, neighbouring estates with La Granja in the town of Labastida. The grapes are carried to the winery by some of the best wine producers in the town. The vines are planted in poor soil. Limestone clay-calcareous terraces close to Sierra Cantabria with a climate that favours the ripening of the grapes with a great contrast in temperature. Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida undergoes an aging for 10 months in French oak barrels. The result is a fresh and pleasant wine.

This red has a lovely texture, polished and deep. The flavours are a bit muted, but reveal notes of cherry preserves, candied orange, dried herbs and vanilla, with light, firm tannins and orange peel acidity.

Following on from the 2005 and 2007 releases, this is another stylish, complex, world-class red from Vicente Cebrián and María Vargas, with 19 Mazuelo providing the backbone of this ageworthy wine. The heat of the vintage has put plenty of flesh on the bones, complementing the savoury, spicy elegance. The tannins and acidity add balance and refinement.

Varietal: Carignan Blend. The idea of La Vinya del Vuit was born almost ten years ago when René Barbier sat down with his cousin one 'crazy night' and brainstormed wine projects. René, who runs Clos Mogador along with his namesake, who also happens to be his father, wanted to do something on his own with Sara Pérez and he decided that the wine would be named after a number. When morning came and he could see his idea with sober eyes, he and Sarah agreed to invite three friends each to participate in the Priorat project, which would result in La Vinya del Vuit, 'The Vineyard of the Eight'. The idea was to invite people who were not too involved in the wine world in order to open their eyes and spread a love for wine through them. After all was said and done, they bought a vineyard together, with 12 ownership each. And this was not just any old vineyard; rather it was an abandoned, overgrown plot, where every weekend of the first year was spent finding and cleaning the old grapevines, which would later yield the approximately 2,000 bottles produced each year

ABV: 14%. Enticing scents of red berry, baking spice, Mediterranean scrub and a hint of eucalyptus slowly emerge. The elegantly structured palate delivers black cherry, licorice, clove and espresso framed in youthfully austere but refined tannins. It's still young and tightly wound but balanced, with bright acidity.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz. Deep garnet-purple, the 2013 The Signature (Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz) has very youthful, pure black fruits aromas with a pronounced black plum and black currant nose with underlying pepper, Provence herbs and licorice suggestions. Big, dense and profoundly expressive in the mouth, the palate is firmly constructed with chewy tannins and great persistence.

The colour is bright with deep crimson and some amber tints. The aroma has striking berry character which is a feature of 1994, added together with strong smoky oak tones, which highlights the intense nature of the Penley style. The palate with its rich, sweet berry flavours and strong oak and grape tannins to balance and integrate this year's strong flavours. A powerful wine, best defined as full bodied style. While it is difficult to recommend maturation periods, this wine with its palate balance and finely tuned tannins, will allow a minimum of 10 years to achieve its full potential.

Varietal: Cabernet Blend. Such were the tricky conditions in '02 that the normal 20 Sangiovese element was omitted to leave a predominantly Cabernet wine. Much for the better, some might say, for the nose seems racier, better defined with bright cassis notes;the palate follows being generously ripe yet marked by some fine Cabernet tannins & fresh acidity. The wine is rich, dark and concentrated; it has aromas of violets and "esteva" (rock rose) and is very smooth and elegant on the palate. The 1995 Vesuvio will rank as one of the Quinta's finest Vintages. All the wine made at Vesuvio was trodden by foot in the Quinta's ancient lagares.

Blackberries, licorice, and melted asphalt stand out in this full-bodied, beautifully made vintage port's moderately intense bouquet. It is not one of the great Graham's ports, and is less sweet than normal, but it is full-bodied, rich, concentrated, and impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.

In a port tasting, tasting Graham's is almost like tasting a big, rich, succulent Merlot after a group of blockbuster, tannic Cabernets. Sweeter and more obvious than many ports, the opaque purple-colored 1994 is fruity, powerful, and rich, with an addictive hedonistic quality.

This is a very muscular, powerful and age-worthy Vintage. It has exceptional balance and structure, and is intensely aromatic and full-bodied on the palate. There is an explosion of luscious black fruit flavours ending with hints of spice and mint. In blind tastings, the Graham's 1983 invariably obtains exceptional ratings.

One rarely sees this brand stateside. The 1985 is one of the surprises of the vintage. It has an intense nose of chocolate, berry fruit, and tar. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied with layers of fruit. It finishes sweeter than some of the other ports with a great deal of tannin

BenMarco Malbec is a testament to Uco Valley, from which it hails, proffering aromas of fresh black fruit and floral notes of violets. The palate shows great balance, very fine tannins, and a thread of acidity going through its core, lifting it up and going its length

Château Teyssier is a St Emilion Grand Cru located in Vignonet, one of five St Emilion communes. The property has a long history of wine production, going back as far as 1714 when it was little more than a farm. In 1869 the property was purchased by the historian Jules Roy, who constructed a grand Château and developed the surrounding vineyards. From then on little had changed until Jonathan and Lyn Maltus purchased the property in 1994.

Salon is located in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côtes des Blancs. The core of Salon emerges from a small vineyard that sits right behind the house. Salon is done entirely in steel, with no malolactic fermentation, one of the reasons the wines need extended time in bottle prior to release, and in most cases, several years on the cork before they start drinking well. In vintages in which Salon is not made, the fruit goes into Delamotte, Salon's sister estate and neighbour. The Delamotte style is less severe, as malolactic fermentation is employed to give the wines softer contours and more immediate breadth

Varietal: Chardonnay. Sub-Region: North Coast. 2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn't have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25 of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure

In the mouth, the notes of honey remain and there are also flavours of yellow fruits and a lovely oaky touch. It is a lovely round wine with power and elegance

Concentrated nose filled with nectarines, preserved peach, wildflower honey, cinnamon and candied lime. Great weight and texture on the palate, with a long flavourful finish

Bright aromas of peach, jasmine, honeysuckle and lemon chiffon hint towards the medley of mango, mandarin, fresh green apple, honeydew melon and a faint whisper of licorice

Varietal: Riesling. Cru: Grand Cru. The 2015 Riesling Schlossberg comes from the bottom of the praised single vineyard and opens with a lovely, pure, refined and elegant bouquet of bright Riesling and lemon fruit aromas, intertwined with very delicate flinty/mineral flavors. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and rich, yet elegant Riesling with a warm, super ripe fruit (that reminds me of healthy shriveled raisins) and some grippy rather than fine phenols. The acidity is vital and finely racy, and takes this Schlossberg to a long and aromatic, pretty refreshing finish with stimulating salinity

The shiny pale yellow color with green reflections opens on a delicate nose that combines the smells of flowers with those of white fruits (peach, apricot), then is enriched with nuances of vanilla and caramel. The mouth offers a well balanced matter between the freshness and the fruity aromas (passion, mango) which persist in an elegant final and very long finish

2016 blessed our Niagara River vineyards with ideal conditions for this inaugural Rosé. Early harvests of Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, very limited skin contact and attentive crafting resulted in a stylish, lightly-hued Rosé with incredible versatility. This Merlot sourced from 2 blocks of our vineyard - some of which are the oldest vines in the farm - is vibrant and medium bodied. A provocative nose of damson plum, blackberry and hints of coconut husks leads to a balanced but intense mid palate. Fruit forward, yet angular, this youthful Merlot is more energetic than plush but will develop added dimension with further bottle age

Our 2012 Incivility Pinot Noir has a shy nose starts with notes of wet stone and opens up into ripe raspberries and current compote. The fruit is complemented by smatterings of vanilla and toasted hazelnuts. The palate has a vibrant and powerful entrance. Fresh berries and the rind of a ripe tangerine step in to mellow the dramatic opening. Oak and tannins are well integrated, folded delicately into the balance of fruit. Light garnet colour with red and black fruit. Vanilla and toast complement cassis and cherry flavours and spicy velvety tannins fill out this well rounded Pinot Noir. Its balanced structure will allow the wine to age 6 to 7 years

Varietal: Pinot Noir. Sub-Region: Niagara. Innovative Flat Rock Cellars specializes in crafting elegant Pinot Noir. This elegant wine is a great introduction, with its flavours of raspberry, beetroot, smoked meat and spice. This works well with grilled salmon or with veal in a red wine reduction

Hand-picked and hand-sorted on September 24th, the grapes were de-stemmed, partially crushed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. After 3 days, fermentation occurred spontaneously in small open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the skins were punched-down by hand 2 times per day. Once fermentation was finished, the wine remained on skins for 6 days before being gently pressed. It was then transferred to French oak barrels (25 new, 25 1-year-old, 50 older) and aged for 15 months

Sub-Region: Niagara. This Pinot is from the Lowrey Vineyard which planted their vines back in 1984 it is rumoured to be the oldest Pinot planting in Niagara. The nose is pretty with floral notes, yet has plenty of fruit to drive it home. Palate is cran-cherry with raspberry and a lovely tartness that serves to refresh the palate rather than overwhelm it. There is such a richness and depth of fruit and spice to this wine that it's almost impossible to put it down

This dry and purplish red coloured red showcases a complex nose releasing woody, empyreumatic, spicy and fruity scents. You will be charmed with this full-bodied wine revealing a broad texture, fleshy tannins and a long finish

Dark purple with vermillion-tinged edges, the plush and refreshing 2014 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon lures the taster with a multidimensional perfume that fills the glass with notes of jasmine, lavender, and spring flowers. Interwoven into the floral notes are unctuous layers of plum, blackberry, and black currants. Loads of smoked cardamom, cinnamon, and black licorice unwind onto the palate where the vibrant acidity carries the long finish to a state of balance and equilibrium

From the most coveted blocks within To Kalon-the treasured vineyard of Robert Mondavi that was the location of his winery home since 1966- this is the fourth vintage of the To Kalon-designated Reserve. Like a classic rock 'n' roll tune from that era, this wine ranks among the most revered and will continue to be memorable for decades. Among the top five songs of 1966 were 'Cherish' by The Association and 'Soul and Inspiration' by The Righteous Brothers, which are appropriately a good fit for describing To Kalon Vineyard. From its aromas of dark cherry and vanilla spice to its deeply-expressive notes of graphite, leather, plum, and earth, the velvet drapes across the palate from start to finish

Deep purple to the core. Blueberry pie, cloves and black plum jump from the glass. The nose is also filled with anise, cedar and black pepper. The velvety mouthfeel is complemented by a range of dark berry fruit, pepper spice and cocoa. The tannins are wonderfully balanced, chalky and present but not over gripping. The mountain acidity is definitely present and balanced with the tannins

Varietal: Cabernet Blend, Sub-Region: North Coast. The Cabernet Sauvignon can be a bit simple, so, in the "Cain Way," we have blended judicious quantities of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot to build complexity, to add nuance, to articulate the structure, and to add length to the fi nish of the wine. The Franc gives a bit of lift to the nose, and the Merlot gives a bit of fat to the entry and mid-palate, while the Verdot adds backbone to the blend

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon. Lush aromatics of raspberry and dark cherry with a hint of eucalyptus, The Oracle is decadent, but with finesse. Earthiness and layers of dried flowers and cocoa integrate harmoniously into a finely balanced marriage between tannin and acid

Another classic from Philip Togni, his 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain does not have the power and richness of his greatest vintages, but it exhibits the cedary, Pauillac/St.-Julien style that Togni routinely achieves. A healthy dark ruby color is followed by a sweet kiss of underbrush, forest floor, black currants and a whiff of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied and playing close to the vest at present, it reveals good fruit as well as the potential to evolve for 15 or more years

The mouthfeel is unctuous and succulent with a savory black fruit sustained by tight tannins and a finish on blond tobacco notes. This may be the finest Altagracia to date, deeper and more concentrated than 2012, with a darker character and a great ageing potential. 80 Cabernet Sauvignon. 10 Cabernet Franc. 6 Petit Verdot. 4 Malbec

A broad expression of aromas and flavors. Bold dark fruits are ample and plush coming forth black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and a hint of sweet cedar spice. The generous flavors come up boldly, but are silky and mouth filling. Generous with black fruit flavours, hints of dark chocolate and a touch of toasty caramel and spice

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is dark and opaque, with a hint of violet edges. Initially expressing floral (violet and iris) aromatics, the fruit characteristics (blueberries and fig) become dominate. Opulent on entry, the 2015 builds richness and volume while keeping a vibrancy on the palate, even a hint of playfulness. Focus comes form natural acidity, while the pleasing balance originates from the fruit. The 2015 finishes with energy, a mineral edge, and sweet tannins

Sub-Region: North Coast. Heightened citrus blossom and rose petal aromatics, and builds in power and presence on the palate with cassis, dark fruits, bergamot, and dried wild herb with notes of cigar box and leather

Always one of the stars of Napa is Cliff Lede's Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry and the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry is a blend of 87 Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 Merlot, 6 Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Never the biggest wine made by Cliff Lede, this is an elegant, classic Stags Leap example with finesse allied to beautifully pure power and balance. Deep and rich and possibly, at this stage, less expressive than some of its siblings, it is simply loaded and poised for a brilliant future. RP

From an 11-acre vineyard just north of the Oakville corridor, the 2012 St. Eden shows gorgeous, cedary Christmas fruitcake notes, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, spice box, earth, and almost first growth Pauillac-like cassis and lead pencil shavings. Deep, full-bodied, and fabulously concentrated, this stunner flirts with perfection. RP

Sub-Region: North Coast. 2012 Vecina Proprietary Red is the perfect Napa version of a hypothetical blend of a La Mission Haut-Brion and Mouton-Rothschild. This is riveting Cabernet Sauvignon with great intensity, a killer fragrance of burning embers, charcoal, gravel, blackberry, cassis and earth. Fabulously intense and full-bodied, with majestic flavor intensity, a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, incredible purity and length, and supple tannins, this magnificent wine comes closest to the great Harlan Estate itself. Drink it over the next 35 years. RP

Sub-Region: North Coast. The 2012 vintage of "IX Estate" Red portrays the same exuberance of the 2002, with added purity and definition. This vintage of "IX Estate" captures all of the terroir and the varietal notes we love from this rocky, iron-rich site, with even a greater sense of volume. The wine is loaded with inky cassis, red currant, and black licorice aromatics. The grilled herbs, the iron, and the crushed rock flavors from "IX Estate" beam through the fruit giving this wine a perfect sense of place. The texture is lushly structured with immense volume and a long, persistent finish. The synthesis of fruit and earth reflect ripeness balanced with precision - a hallmark of this vineyard. The 2012 "IX Estate" is a blend of 62 Cabernet Sauvignon, 19 Merlot, 11 Cabernet Franc and 8 Petit Verdot. Winemaker

Sub-Region: North Coast. Dark brooding blackberry, forest fruit and tobacco flavors

The perfectly ripe, dense, black and blue fruits are the first thing you notice. But as you peer further into the caliginous wine, you find this cool, refreshing note combining dark red berries accompanied by incense, smoke, forest leaf and a light, background hint mint. On the palate, the wine balances power, restraint, elegance and purity. Complicated and concentrated, the wine is fleshy, rich, silky, mouth-filling and vibrant. The finish sits with you for close to one full minute

On the palate the wine is medium-full bodied with classic Bordeaux proportions, wonderful concentration, with flavors of cherry, rich chocolate and spiced cake. In the mouth, the first impression is fresh berry fruit, then the soft, broad tannins carry notes of marion berries, nutmeg and sandalwood through a lingering finish. You'll pick up on the spicy vanilla barrel notes through the finish

Ripe summer blackberries and plums overwhelm both the nose and palate of this wine. Its trademark inky, jammy qualities are a barrage of black fruit and spice, adding layer upon layer of complexity

Caymus Vinewayrs was founded in 1971 when Charlie & Lorna Wagner wanted to start a family-owned winery at their ranch in Napa Valley. Enlisting their son Chuck, fresh out of high school, the first vintage was produced in 1972, with 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Nearly 50 years later, Caymus Vineyards remains 100 family-owned by the Wagners

Sub-Region: Dundee Hills. Medium to light, evenly-toned carmine color. The aromas combine black raspberry fruitiness with scents of smoke and ash to create a sense of dusty and lightly-wooded fruit. In the mouth the wine delivers peppy flavors of tart raspberry and blackberry fruit with hightoned strawberry jam notes appearing at the back of the mouth. With repeated sips additional accents of cardamom and anise appear, backed by cherry cola notes and a hint of barrel char. There is a vigorous quality to the flavors, with edgy tartness and brightlytoned fruitiness. The wine seems to vacillate between high notes of strawberry and raspberry, with darker tones of blackberry. The structure is firm but not domineering, while the acidity is bracing. The fruit-dominated finish is of medium length.

A brilliant purple-red colour that shines in the glass. Aromas of violets, crushed boysenberry and blackberry with hints of roasted cinnamon, clove and green pepper. A balanced mid palate leads to a fine tannin finish with spices and length supported by French oak

Varietal: Pinot Noir. Inviting nose of sweet, dark fruit and softly spiced oak. Pure, soft and naturally dense fruit, but with a refreshing streak of acidity. Hints of dark chocolate, bitterness and spice on the finish

A nose of dusty florals emphasised by pink roses and violets integrates seamlessly with Asian spices of cinnamon and clove. The palate opens softly, staying with the florals and adding fresh berries and a pleasing seam of minerality. Mouth-coating, but never cloying, it is subtle and caressing; a wine of harmony, restraint and sophistication that intrigues rather than shouts its breeding. Deep crimson in colour with generous aromas of boysenberry, blood plums, tar, coffee and vanilla. A full bodied wine with a soft round flourish of fruit. Varietal: Shiraz. Bright, lifted and aromatic, with raspberry and choc mint characters. Full flavoured and elegant, with dark fruit flavours of plum and blackberry, complemented by dark chocolate, liquorice and white pepper spice.

According to Nick, it is the cool, coastal Langhorne Creek climate that gives the reds this lift. Hot northerly winds from the centre of the continent are blocked by the Mt Lofty Ranges to the north of Langhorne Creek. And every day at 5 pm in comes a cool "Lake Doctor" wind from the Southern Ocean, that slows ripening, preserves acidity and amplifies the fruit and savoury aromatics. As do the cooler fermentation techniques employed by Ben Glaetzer. And to me, that is the real key, an aromatic not all that different from other Aussie regions in terms of profile, but just a bit more piquant and fragrant
