Three tasters from our beginner mezcal list
El Silencio is made in Oaxaca, Mexico, using the traditional process carried on by generations of mezcaleros. Meticulously picked agaves are roasted, crushed, and double distilled resulting in a full-bodied flavor.
Mezcal Unión Uno uses farm-grown maguey Espadin and wild maguey Cirial. This agave is cut and roasted for four days. The families that produce Union have several generations experience as their main craft. Union uses a collection of different producer-families in the region to produce their bottles.
San Luis Del Rio is at the epicenter of espadin production in Oaxaca. Here due to the extreme shifts in elevation and intense heat, the agaves ripen to astounding levels much quicker than elsewhere making for mezcals full of sweet nectar like agave flavors balanced by a smoky intensity. Notes here include bitter melon, coconut water, verbena, honey water, kiwi, and bright acidity on the earthy finish.
made from agave Espadin, which takes 8 to 10 years to mature. This Mezcal is crafted in San Juan del Rio by maestro mezcalero Rodolfo Hernandez. It has a savory smoke flavor with earthy undertones
La Luna Ensamble is crafted with two agaves that are native to the state of Michoacan. This ensamble is 70% Cupreata and 30% Tequilana. The cooked agave is milled by hand and naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats before being double distilled in a copper and pinewood Tarascan still. Due to the artisinal nature of this mezcal, the ABV will vary by batch.
Women owned. Handcrafted and organic, YOLA Mezcal follows a distinctive recipe from 1971 passed down by Yola's grandfather. It is produced in San Juan Del Rio and bottled by women in Oaxaca. On the nose, there are clean agave flavors with vibrant smoke. The flavors are bright and refreshing, yet complex with earthy mineral flavors. The finish is long and has notes of smoked fruits and peppery spice.
Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. Mezcal Tosba is created by using sustainable, agricultural methods of harvesting and distillation passed down by generations of farmers and mezcaleros from their region. The flavor of Espadin transports you to its tropical environment with a light nose and long-lasting citrus and fruitiness on the tongue
An extremely small batch release from the Ramos family. Mal Bien Sierra Negra is made with the rare maguey Sierra Negra (Agave Americana). This tiny batch only yielded 48 liters and from that tiny quantity only 24 bottles made their way to the US. Aromas of sandalwood, cedar, and dried cinnamon sticks. It has luxurious notes of fresh fruit: melon, papaya, and strawberry.
Rey Campero is artisanally produced featuring in ground cooking for up to five days, followed by cooling and resting up to one week. Cooked agaves are crushed by a tahona and open air fermented with natural ambient yeasts for up to 12 days before double distillation in small copper pot stills. Flavors are somewhat smoky with charred oak bark, griddled cactus paddle, and roasted poblano pepper. Some leatheriness in the texture adds another layer to the overall effect, with is earthy and balanced.
Yuu Baal Tobala is a well-balanced mezcal that is full of sweet tones and flavors of lemongrass and herbs. There is a distinguished smell of wild flowers, smoked wood, stone, vanilla, clove, peach and apples. This mezcal is made by mezcalero Isaias Martinez Juan using wild agave Tobala in San Juan del Rio. It is aged 12 months in glass before being bottled for distribution.
Nuestra Soledad La Compañia is made in a palenque that is rests at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. The agaves are grown on a steep slope, which helps control natural drainage and irrigation. This Mezcal has notes of high-toned fruit and green pepper. It is bright and refined.
Real Minero is considered by many to be one of the world's finest Mezcal producers. Made by mezcal royalty Graciela Angeles, The family has been making mezcal for several generations in Santa Catarina Minas, and they're known both in Mexico and abroad for creating some of the best bottles available. Real Minero Espadin y Largo has notes of fresh green herbs, orange blossoms, and wet clay. The two different agave make this feel balanced and round.
El Jolgorio Barril uses the maguey Barril, which is part of the Karwinskii agaves that grows wild or in a semi-cultivated environment. The Barril piña is dense with sugars and very little water, which results in a Mezcal of great complexity. This Mezcal delicately balances sweetness, citrus, and a distinct minerality. It is earthy with hints of light smoke.
Mal de Amor is located in "Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico" and is completely family owned. The agave used for production at Mal de Amor comes from a variety of different lands in Oaxaca which allows for a rich diversity in expressions to include different terroir Light and fruity, teasing the palate with gentle smoke and drawing you in for the next taste.
450 Liter production. Gusto Historico Madrecuixe/ Bicuixe/ Tepextate was made by maestro mezcalero Emanuel Ramos in the community of Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. This spirit was produced using 50% Agave karwinskii, 20% Agave karwinskii sp, and 30% Agave marmorata. The agaves were single distilled in a copper refrescadera still. Agua del Sol Mexicano was produced by maestro mezcalero Francisco Garcia León, who was one of the original producers to inspire the creation of the mezcaleria CUISH. Lean and mean with touches of fresh ground granite, salt spray, and fresh crushed lemongrass
Flor del Desierto Sierra is made by Jose Armando Fernandez, grown and distilled in the Madera region of Chihuahua. The plants are cooked in shallow pits fueled by oak firewood, shredded by axe, knife and finally cow stomping before being open-air fermented in wood tanks and distilled in clay. Such a fresh, green nose against a clay backdrop and very subtle sweetness.
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things you are likely to taste. Not for the uninitiated, this exceptionally rare spirit was made in the most traditional fashions. Virgilio Ramírez ferments the Papalometl agaves in bovine leather before distilling twice in clay pots to proof. Notes of jalapeno, avocado leaf, pine sap and honeydew just begin to scratch the surface. Make no mistake, this is a profound spirit and the lucky few who will drink it will not soon forget it.
From the Ángeles Carreño family in Santa Catarina Minas comes the brand Real Minero, helmed by fifth-generation mezcal producers Graciela. 'Largo' is another member of the storied Agave karwinskii species in Santa Catarina Minas, often referred to in other communities as Tobaziche. Real Minero's Largo is a particularly beautiful example. Real Minero Largo, Becuela is made with Maguey Largo (agave Karwinskii) and Maguey Becuela (agave Marmorata). Producer hand-mashed the agave in a stone pit, fermented them with well water, and double distilled in Filipino style clay pot stills. The batch produced in 2019 produced just 86 bottles.Fresh ripe bananas on the initial nose but more earthy clay notes when I came back to it after some time in the glass. The palate has some crisp green pepper notes
Made by Margarito Cortes, who comes from a family that has been producing traditional mezcal for many generations. He works closely with all of the agave that he uses for his mezcal, and he is known for experimenting with the addition of different ingredients in an extra third distillation, similar to a Pechuga. For this mezcal, he added mango and habanero during the third distillation. The agave were roasted with mezquite and encino wood. It was fermented for seven days, and distilled in a cobre con refrescadera still. There were 238 litres of this made in May 2018

Selecting only ripe, quiotudo maguey, the three palenqueros co-roasted and for seven days, co-fermented nearly equal parts of home grown Espadín harvested from a fertile red soil parcel with wild Jabalín from black earthen family lands from a neighboring community. El Silencio is made in Oaxaca, Mexico, using the traditional process carried on by generations of mezcaleros. Meticulously picked agaves are roasted, crushed, and double distilled resulting in a full-bodied flavor.
Mezcal Unión Uno uses farm-grown maguey Espadin and wild maguey Cirial. This agave is cut and roasted for four days. The families that produce Union have several generations experience as their main craft. Union uses a collection of different producer-families in the region to produce their bottles.
San Luis Del Rio is at the epicenter of espadin production in Oaxaca. Here due to the extreme shifts in elevation and intense heat, the agaves ripen to astounding levels much quicker than elsewhere making for mezcals full of sweet nectar like agave flavors balanced by a smoky intensity. Notes here include bitter melon, coconut water, verbena, honey water, kiwi, and bright acidity on the earthy finish.

La Luna Ensamble is crafted with two agaves that are native to the state of Michoacan. This ensamble is 70% Cupreata and 30% Tequilana. The cooked agave is milled by hand and naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats before being double distilled in a copper and pinewood Tarascan still. Due to the artisinal nature of this mezcal, the ABV will vary by batch.
Women owned. Handcrafted and organic, YOLA Mezcal follows a distinctive recipe from 1971 passed down by Yola's grandfather. It is produced in San Juan Del Rio and bottled by women in Oaxaca. On the nose, there are clean agave flavors with vibrant smoke. The flavors are bright and refreshing, yet complex with earthy mineral flavors. The finish is long and has notes of smoked fruits and peppery spice.
Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. Mezcal Tosba is created by using sustainable, agricultural methods of harvesting and distillation passed down by generations of farmers and mezcaleros from their region. An extremely small batch release from the Ramos family. Mal Bien Sierra Negra is made with the rare maguey Sierra Negra (Agave Americana). This tiny batch only yielded 48 liters and from that tiny quantity only 24 bottles made their way to the US. Aromas of sandalwood, cedar, and dried cinnamon sticks. It has luxurious notes of fresh fruit: melon, papaya, and strawberry.
Rey Campero is artisanally produced featuring in ground cooking for up to five days, followed by cooling and resting up to one week. Cooked agaves are crushed by a tahona and open air fermented with natural ambient yeasts for up to 12 days before double distillation in small copper pot stills. Flavors are somewhat smoky with charred oak bark, griddled cactus paddle, and roasted poblano pepper. Some leatheriness in the texture adds another layer to the overall effect, with is earthy and balanced.
Yuu Baal Tobala is a well-balanced mezcal that is full of sweet tones and flavors of lemongrass and herbs. There is a distinguished smell of wild flowers, smoked wood, stone, vanilla, clove, peach and apples. This mezcal is made by mezcalero Isaias Martinez Juan using wild agave Tobala in San Juan del Rio. It is aged 12 months in glass before being bottled for distribution.
Nuestra Soledad La Compañia is made in a palenque that is rests at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. The agaves are grown on a steep slope, which helps control natural drainage and irrigation. This Mezcal has notes of high-toned fruit and green pepper. It is bright and refined.
Real Minero is considered by many to be one of the world's finest Mezcal producers. Made by mezcal royalty Graciela Angeles, The family has been making mezcal for several generations in Santa Catarina Minas, and they're known both in Mexico and abroad for creating some of the best bottles available. Real Minero Espadin y Largo has notes of fresh green herbs, orange blossoms, and wet clay. The two different agave make this feel balanced and round.
El Jolgorio Barril uses the maguey Barril, which is part of the Karwinskii agaves that grows wild or in a semi-cultivated environment. The Barril piña is dense with sugars and very little water, which results in a Mezcal of great complexity. This Mezcal delicately balances sweetness, citrus, and a distinct minerality. It is earthy with hints of light smoke.
Mal de Amor is located in "Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico" and is completely family owned. The agave used for production at Mal de Amor comes from a variety of different lands in Oaxaca which allows for a rich diversity in expressions to include different terroir Light and fruity, teasing the palate with gentle smoke and drawing you in for the next taste.

Flor del Desierto Sierra is made by Jose Armando Fernandez, grown and distilled in the Madera region of Chihuahua. The plants are cooked in shallow pits fueled by oak firewood, shredded by axe, knife and finally cow stomping before being open-air fermented in wood tanks and distilled in clay. Such a fresh, green nose against a clay backdrop and very subtle sweetness.
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things you are likely to taste. Not for the uninitiated, this exceptionally rare spirit was made in the most traditional fashions. Virgilio Ramírez ferments the Papalometl agaves in bovine leather before distilling twice in clay pots to proof. Notes of jalapeno, avocado leaf, pine sap and honeydew just begin to scratch the surface. Make no mistake, this is a profound spirit and the lucky few who will drink it will not soon forget it.
From the Ángeles Carreño family in Santa Catarina Minas comes the brand Real Minero, helmed by fifth-generation mezcal producers Graciela. 'Largo' is another member of the storied Agave karwinskii species in Santa Catarina Minas, often referred to in other communities as Tobaziche. Real Minero's Largo is a particularly beautiful example. It is redolent of fruit, flowers, fresh melon and green pepper, with a deep fiber backbone that lends a contrasting full body and lean, high-toned nose to play off one another.
Real Minero Largo, Becuela is made with Maguey Largo (agave Karwinskii) and Maguey Becuela (agave Marmorata). Producer hand-mashed the agave in a stone pit, fermented them with well water, and double distilled in Filipino style clay pot stills. The batch produced in 2019 produced just 86 bottles.Fresh ripe bananas on the initial nose but more earthy clay notes when I came back to it after some time in the glass. The palate has some crisp green pepper notes
Made by Margarito Cortes, who comes from a family that has been producing traditional mezcal for many generations. He works closely with all of the agave that he uses for his mezcal, and he is known for experimenting with the addition of different ingredients in an extra third distillation, similar to a Pechuga. For this mezcal, he added mango and habanero during the third distillation. The agave were roasted with mezquite and encino wood. It was fermented for seven days, and distilled in a cobre con refrescadera still. There were 238 litres of this made in May 2018
Mal de Amor come from the Central Valley region of Matatlan, Oaxaca also known as The World Capital of Mezcal. Mal de Amor Sierra Negra has a mint quality to it mixed with subtle melon undertones. With flavors of cantaloupe and watermelon, it's a lighter fruit and slightly sweeter offering than you find with other agaves.
Brothers Ramón and Wilfredo García teamed up with their cousin and neighbor, Hugo, to make these 200 liters of this ensamble. Selecting only ripe, quiotudo maguey, the three palenqueros co-roasted and for seven days, co-fermented nearly equal parts of home grown Espadín harvested from a fertile red soil parcel with wild Jabalín from black earthen family lands from a neighboring community. Notes of rosewater, caramel, cinnamon and mango.
Gusto Historico Cucharillo was produced by maestro Emanuel Ramos in the community of Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. The brand was started by one of the co-founders of famed Oaxacan mezcaleria Mezcaloteca, and the Gusto Histórico brand features many of the same producers, with a focus on preserving traditional production methods and practices. El Silencio is made in Oaxaca, Mexico, using the traditional process carried on by generations of mezcaleros. Meticulously picked agaves are roasted, crushed, and double distilled resulting in a full-bodied flavor.
Mezcal Unión Uno uses farm-grown maguey Espadin and wild maguey Cirial. This agave is cut and roasted for four days. The families that produce Union have several generations experience as their main craft. Union uses a collection of different producer-families in the region to produce their bottles.
San Luis Del Rio is at the epicenter of espadin production in Oaxaca. Here due to the extreme shifts in elevation and intense heat, the agaves ripen to astounding levels much quicker than elsewhere making for mezcals full of sweet nectar like agave flavors balanced by a smoky intensity. Notes here include bitter melon, coconut water, verbena, honey water, kiwi, and bright acidity on the earthy finish.

La Luna Ensamble is crafted with two agaves that are native to the state of Michoacan. This ensamble is 70% Cupreata and 30% Tequilana. The cooked agave is milled by hand and naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats before being double distilled in a copper and pinewood Tarascan still. Due to the artisinal nature of this mezcal, the ABV will vary by batch.
Women owned. Handcrafted and organic, YOLA Mezcal follows a distinctive recipe from 1971 passed down by Yola's grandfather. It is produced in San Juan Del Rio and bottled by women in Oaxaca. On the nose, there are clean agave flavors with vibrant smoke. The flavors are bright and refreshing, yet complex with earthy mineral flavors. The finish is long and has notes of smoked fruits and peppery spice.

An extremely small batch release from the Ramos family. Mal Bien Sierra Negra is made with the rare maguey Sierra Negra (Agave Americana). This tiny batch only yielded 48 liters and from that tiny quantity only 24 bottles made their way to the US. Aromas of sandalwood, cedar, and dried cinnamon sticks. It has luxurious notes of fresh fruit: melon, papaya, and strawberry.
Rey Campero is artisanally produced featuring in ground cooking for up to five days, followed by cooling and resting up to one week. Cooked agaves are crushed by a tahona and open air fermented with natural ambient yeasts for up to 12 days before double distillation in small copper pot stills. Flavors are somewhat smoky with charred oak bark, griddled cactus paddle, and roasted poblano pepper. Some leatheriness in the texture adds another layer to the overall effect, with is earthy and balanced.
Yuu Baal Tobala is a well-balanced mezcal that is full of sweet tones and flavors of lemongrass and herbs. There is a distinguished smell of wild flowers, smoked wood, stone, vanilla, clove, peach and apples. This mezcal is made by mezcalero Isaias Martinez Juan using wild agave Tobala in San Juan del Rio. It is aged 12 months in glass before being bottled for distribution.
Nuestra Soledad La Compañia is made in a palenque that is rests at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. The agaves are grown on a steep slope, which helps control natural drainage and irrigation. This Mezcal has notes of high-toned fruit and green pepper. It is bright and refined.
Real Minero is considered by many to be one of the world's finest Mezcal producers. Made by mezcal royalty Graciela Angeles, The family has been making mezcal for several generations in Santa Catarina Minas, and they're known both in Mexico and abroad for creating some of the best bottles available. Real Minero Espadin y Largo has notes of fresh green herbs, orange blossoms, and wet clay. The two different agave make this feel balanced and round.
El Jolgorio Barril uses the maguey Barril, which is part of the Karwinskii agaves that grows wild or in a semi-cultivated environment. The Barril piña is dense with sugars and very little water, which results in a Mezcal of great complexity. This Mezcal delicately balances sweetness, citrus, and a distinct minerality. It is earthy with hints of light smoke.

Flor del Desierto Sierra is made by Jose Armando Fernandez, grown and distilled in the Madera region of Chihuahua. The plants are cooked in shallow pits fueled by oak firewood, shredded by axe, knife and finally cow stomping before being open-air fermented in wood tanks and distilled in clay. Such a fresh, green nose against a clay backdrop and very subtle sweetness.
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things you are likely to taste. Not for the uninitiated, this exceptionally rare spirit was made in the most traditional fashions. Virgilio Ramírez ferments the Papalometl agaves in bovine leather before distilling twice in clay pots to proof. Notes of jalapeno, avocado leaf, pine sap and honeydew just begin to scratch the surface. Make no mistake, this is a profound spirit and the lucky few who will drink it will not soon forget it.
From the Ángeles Carreño family in Santa Catarina Minas comes the brand Real Minero, helmed by fifth-generation mezcal producers Graciela. 'Largo' is another member of the storied Agave karwinskii species in Santa Catarina Minas, often referred to in other communities as Tobaziche. Real Minero's Largo is a particularly beautiful example. It is redolent of fruit, flowers, fresh melon and green pepper, with a deep fiber backbone that lends a contrasting full body and lean, high-toned nose to play off one another.
Real Minero Largo, Becuela is made with Maguey Largo (agave Karwinskii) and Maguey Becuela (agave Marmorata). Producer hand-mashed the agave in a stone pit, fermented them with well water, and double distilled in Filipino style clay pot stills. The batch produced in 2019 produced just 86 bottles.Fresh ripe bananas on the initial nose but more earthy clay notes when I came back to it after some time in the glass. The palate has some crisp green pepper notes
Made by Margarito Cortes, who comes from a family that has been producing traditional mezcal for many generations. He works closely with all of the agave that he uses for his mezcal, and he is known for experimenting with the addition of different ingredients in an extra third distillation, similar to a Pechuga. For this mezcal, he added mango and habanero during the third distillation. The agave were roasted with mezquite and encino wood. It was fermented for seven days, and distilled in a cobre con refrescadera still. There were 238 litres of this made in May 2018
Mal de Amor come from the Central Valley region of Matatlan, Oaxaca also known as The World Capital of Mezcal. Mal de Amor Sierra Negra has a mint quality to it mixed with subtle melon undertones. With flavors of cantaloupe and watermelon, it's a lighter fruit and slightly sweeter offering than you find with other agaves.
Brothers Ramón and Wilfredo García teamed up with their cousin and neighbor, Hugo, to make these 200 liters of this ensamble. Selecting only ripe, quiotudo maguey, the three palenqueros co-roasted and for seven days, co-fermented nearly equal parts of home grown Espadín harvested from a fertile red soil parcel with wild Jabalín from black earthen family lands from a neighboring community. Notes of rosewater, caramel, cinnamon and mango.

The brand was started by one of the co-founders of famed Oaxacan mezcaleria Mezcaloteca, and the Gusto Histórico brand features many of the same producers, with a focus on preserving traditional production methods and practices.
