Nama fu is said to have been used as an ingredient in vegetarian cuisine during the late Kamakura period. It was consumed as a valuable source of protein by Zen monks who were prohibited from eating meat. Grilled are the awafu, yomogi fu, and momiji fu, topped with a special dengaku miso.
