The Nagoya Cochin, officially known as Nagoya breed, was developed by the brothers Sohei and Masahide Kaifu, who were former samurai of the Owari domain during the Meiji era. On March 10, 1905, it was recognized by the Japan Poultry Association as the first domestically produced practical breed of chicken. In honor of this fact, Aichi Prefecture and the Nagoya Cochin Association established March 10 as 'Nagoya Cochin Day.' Today, it is well-known across the country for its excellent meat quality and the rich, flavorful taste of its eggs, establishing itself as a brand chicken loved by many.
