Binchotan charcoal is a type of charcoal made primarily from Ubamegashi oak and produced in the unique charcoal kilns of the Kii Southern region. The history of Binchotan charcoal dates back to ancient times, reportedly starting during the Heian period (800 years ago) in the era of the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi. It is said that Binchu-ya Chosukeemon, a charcoal dealer in Kishu, named it 'Binchotan charcoal' to mark its beginning.
