The petal rice cake has its roots in Heian period cuisine and is part of the New Year's 'tooth hardening' ceremony, which wishes for longevity. During this ceremony, it is customary to eat daikon, boar, and pressed sweetfish (which were traditionally salted sweetfish used for New Year celebrations). It is said that a confection modeled after this custom spread during the Edo period, becoming the prototype of the later 'petal rice cake.' It comes with a serving of matcha.
