A hidden okonomiyaki restaurant in Ningyocho
Established in 1948, Sano-ya is an okonomiyaki restaurant nestled in a small alley in Ningyocho, offering a charming atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa era, complete with tatami seating. Entering the warm atmosphere of the shop in the back alley, I feel uplifted by the familiar illustration on the window at the entrance. The style of sitting around the teppan in the tatami room on the second floor is comfortable, allowing me to enjoy a nostalgic ambiance. It's also interesting to be able to place orders with a retro call system, and I get excited when I hear the response. The specialty 'Yoshimachi-yaki' combines the flavors of egg, mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley), and shellfish, with the dashi (broth) spreading gently, making it very delicious. The okonomiyaki (savory pancake) is light and fluffy thanks to the yam, and the version with ginger has a refreshing aftertaste when eaten with soy sauce. The teppan menu items like buttered oysters and grilled cabbage also have a wonderful aroma, and when everyone gathers around, we can't help but keep reaching for our chopsticks.
