Tsurube Sushi Yasuke

A sushi restaurant specializing mainly in ayu kaiseki using wild ayu caught in the Kii water system. Signature dishes include salt-grilled wild ayu and the signboard item “grilled ayu sansho sushi.” At lunchtime the popular “ayu with vegetable ankake” is offered. These and other items are served as course meals. Seasonally, whole young ayu sushi is also available. This is a three-story wooden building rebuilt in Showa 14 (1939), offering a calm space that evokes history and charm. From the spacious tatami seating you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the mountain garden designed to resemble a cliff, allowing you to dine while appreciating the beauty of nature.

The oldest surviving sushi restaurant in Japan, boasting a tradition of approximately 800 years. The building was rebuilt in 1939 after a great fire. This is the shop that served as the setting for "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura — The Sushi Shop Scene," one of the three great masterpieces of Bunraku and Kabuki. During the Showa period it was visited by literary figures and, as a renowned establishment, has continued to preserve the food culture of Yoshino.

I was born in 1979. As the eldest son, I studied Japanese cuisine in Kyoto to inherit the family business, and from 2026 I took over management and the kitchen. Considering Yasuke's history and the culture of Nara, I work daily, unafraid of change, so that customers can feel and taste the atmosphere of Oku Yamato and so it can be passed down to the next generation.
