A Kyushu Tavern Famous for Freshly Caught Squid and Sesame Mackerel

Hidden in the basement near Kayabacho Station, Hakata Fukuya is a gem chosen by an owner from Kyushu, featuring seasonal seafood and local dishes. The presentation of freshly caught squid and sesame mackerel is outstanding in both freshness and portion size, with meticulous preparation that includes tempura and grilled dishes made from the ears and legs. A variety of side dishes like steamed onions and chicken tempura are also available, and the sake selection includes fragrant premium brands like Mitsui no Kazu and Dassai, served in optimal condition. It is well-regarded for allowing guests to enjoy the authentic flavors and drinks of Kyushu in a relaxed atmosphere.

This shop is located underground, just a short walk from the station, and has an easy-going atmosphere. There are counter seats where you can see the staff at work, which is enjoyable. The tempura, freshly fried on the spot, is light and crispy, with a delightful aroma that lifts your spirits. The bowl topped with anago (conger eel), shrimp, squid, eggplant, and shiso leaves is filled with a variety of ingredients. The sauce is perfectly coated, creating a pleasant harmony between the batter and the rice. Miso soup and pickles are also served, making it enjoyable until the very end.

Hakata Motsunabe

We accept orders from two servings. We use 'Ago Dashi' made from dried flying fish, which is common in western Japan, especially in Fukuoka and Nagasaki. It has a refined and refreshing sweetness and unique umami, which we incorporated into a soy sauce-based motsunabe soup. Enjoy the plump and rare domestic beef offal.
